tollesexteriorwest.jpg

The west side exterior of the gas proofed 2nd traverse at Battery Tolles, taken from the top of the command post on the 3rd traverse. The concrete block on top has the chimneys for the two fireplaces and dates to at least 1912. The purpose of the iron tripod mount is unknown but it appeared by 1935 and some aerial photos show a very tall mast on it.. The large round hole cut into the edge of the recess with the sliding door is the air intake for the small room.
