Fort Worden became a strategic Army base for coastal artillery to defend the Puget Sound and cities of Seattle and Tacoma to the south. Additionally, it was used to defend the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton. All firings from the cannons at Fort Worden was for practice only and no combat artillery fire was ever used. The Triangle of Fire consisted of Fort Worden, Fort Casey and Fort Flagler. These three forts insured that any hostile warship would be dealt with should they have entered the Puget Sound.
